How to get birthday notifications from Google Calendar

3 min read

If you can see a birthday in Google Calendar but do not receive a reminder, check the entry’s notification settings and how you expect the alert to arrive. A birthday imported from Contacts and a calendar event you create yourself may need different attention.

Google’s help page says that birthday information can sync from Google Contacts and that you can create a birthday event when you want notifications about a specific birthday. Google’s birthday guidance

Identify the entry you are looking at

Open the birthday and inspect the available details. Is it linked to a contact, a birthday event, or an ordinary event that happens to have “birthday” in its title? Also check which account you are using.

Write down what you find before creating another entry. If one date already appears twice, adding a third copy makes troubleshooting harder.

If the date is not visible at all, check the person’s birthday in Contacts and whether the relevant birthday calendar is shown. Google documents birthday visibility and account controls in the same help page linked above. A missing date is a different starting problem from a visible date with no notification.

Inspect the notification on an editable event

For an editable event on a computer, Google’s documented route is to open the event, choose Edit, inspect Notifications, and save after changing them. Add notification lets you add another alert where supported. Google’s notification instructions

If your birthday entry does not offer the controls described, use Google’s birthday instructions for your device rather than treating the missing option as a universal bug. Platform features and account conditions can differ.

Consider a repeating ordinary event as a separate approach

You can keep a birthday as an ordinary event on a calendar you manage. Give it a clear title, choose the upcoming celebration date, and configure yearly repetition. Google’s recurring-event guide explains how to set the repeat frequency and end condition. Google’s recurring-event guide

Inspect the next year’s occurrence and its alert settings. If you do not know the person’s birth year, the year of this upcoming event is the celebration year; do not present it as their date of birth.

This approach may coexist with a contact birthday, so decide which entry you intend to use for reminders. Keep a note of your choice if you manage a long list.

Check where the notification should arrive

For desktop alerts, Google says Calendar must remain open in the browser and browser notifications must be allowed. A desktop setup is therefore not proof that your phone will alert you. Check the instructions for the device on which you actually want the reminder. Google’s notification troubleshooting

Use a clearly labeled temporary event to check general delivery if necessary. An ordinary event test does not establish that every birthday entry has the same settings. Record which kind of event you tested.

Avoid resetting birthday sync as a first experiment

Google warns that switching off Sync from Contacts removes the synced calendar events and changes made to those events. Read the current explanation and preserve anything you need before changing that setting. Hiding a calendar and changing its sync are not interchangeable actions. Google’s sync explanation

If the problem persists, record the device, account, event type, and expected notification time before seeking support. A screenshot of the relevant settings with personal details obscured can make the issue easier to explain.

For the routine around the notification, see what to do when you notice a reminder but still forget to act.
